Ana-Maria Edulescu’s Amazingly Vibrant Paintings of European Cities

By Lizzie Davey @Wanderarti · On 22 October, 2014

I’ve come across Ana-Maria’s vibrant paintings a few times now and I absolutely love them – they’re so full of life and reflect the happy nature of many of Europe’s capitals. One of my favourite things about travel art is seeing how other people view the world. The same place can be represented in so many different ways by so many different people, and Ana-Maria’s style really resonates with how I see the places she has depicted. I think this is why I’m so drawn to her work – plus the eye-catching colours demand attention from a mile off.

Paintings of Paris, Ana-Maria Edulescu

Ana-Maria is a Romanian artist living in Bucharest. She works predominantly with oil paints, building each painting up layer by layer with colour and, as a result, texture. Every piece is a colourful, abstract notion of the place it depicts, but there are always defining features that reassure the viewer where they are – the Eiffel Tower or La Sagrada Familia, for example.

I find that I can look at Ana-Maria’s paintings for ages, being sucked in by the rich colours and the depth. They represent real places, of course, but there is a magical, surreal quality that makes you second guess. I wish the world was actually this vibrant and colours so focused as they are in these paintings – happiness is contagious, right?

The majority of Ana-Maria’s work is in warm shades – reds, yellows, and soft oranges dominate. I love the contrast with the cooler blue colours in this depiction of Greece. Blue is a colour that goes hand in hand with Greece (think the blue-topped houses and the flag), and I like how she’s weaved this into the piece.

Lizzie has a passion for visual vagabonding (a new term, maybe?), whereby she likes to document the beauty in the world via creative forms. She created Wanderarti as a space for this new term to flourish, providing somewhere for art and travel to collide. Apart from pretty things and exploring new places, Lizzie likes tea, takeaways, and cute animals.
