Paintings of Cities at Night by Markus and Martina Bleichner

By Lizzie Davey @Wanderarti · On 24 October, 2014

I love finding new artists who love to travel, so I was very excited when I came across the work of Markus and Martina Bleichner. The colour used in their work is phenomenal, and I particularly like their paintings that depict nighttime – I really think they capture the magic of nightfall. Enjoy!

Your paintings are very colourful and vibrant. How did this style develop?

The style developed over time. Colour was always important for us, Martina and Markus. When we met, we inspired and influenced each other.

Let’s talk about process. What steps do you take when creating each piece?

It is mostly a three step process. First is taking a photo, as on-site painting or on-site sketching is mostly not possible due to time constraints. Second step is working with several photos and create a draft – and the third step is then evaluating the draft, what works good what not and taking it to canvas.

What inspires your work?

We have many sources for inspirations. Mainly travels, e.g. cruises through the caribbean or the mediterranean, where see so many nice places, we immediately want to bring to canvas – but it can also be a movie, a photo in a travel magazine or even books.

Currently we are readying a lot of crime novels, playing in the US or Scotland. So stay tuned, what the outcome from that will be.

An other important source for inspirations are our customers. When they ask for custom paintings, their ideas lead to more ideas and bring us to complete new paths.

Where or what has been your favourite place or thing to paint and why?

There are mostly 3 places, New York City -. because its skyline at night or dusk is so spectacular. The Caribbean, because it is like a dreamland for us with lots of good memories. And the mediterranean, because there are so many beautiful, old cities around.

If you could paint any place or thing in the world where or what would it be and why?

What we would like to do, is to use a drone and take pictures of views and perspectives, which are currently not possible for us.

What do you hope your paintings say about the places they depict?

The should catch the feeling of this place and conserve it, enable to viewers to load their batteries with memories from the time, they were also there.

Finally, what has been your favourite travel destination and why? Can you offer a tip or a piece of advice for readers who might be planning on visiting?

Our favourite travel destination is of course the Caribbean. Nothing compares to a cruise, waking up in the morning, having a look from the balcony, and seeing land in sight, a small island, with green hills, sandy beaches and pittoresque house in small, bustling towns.

And if you want to stay longer, Puerto Rico of course, we can recommend the El Conquistador Hotel in Fajardo with its own private island, Palomino Island.
