Magical Paintings of Cities You Thought You Knew, by Bernhard Vogel

By Lizzie Davey @Wanderarti · On 11 April, 2014

Bernhard Vogel was born in Salzburg, Austria, and has since created a beautifully varied portfolio of paintings with a magical hue. You’ll recognise the names of the cities; New York, Rome, Paris, and you might recognise some of the buildings hinted at here and there. But Bernhard’s paintings will offer you a whole new perspective to places you thought you knew.

With splashes of vibrant, contrasting colours, and splatters from a paintbrush, these paintings represent some of the world’s most famous cities in ways you have never seen them before, with a hint of magic, and a dusting of surrealism. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do!

Bernhard is inspired by great watercolour artists like Turner, Modovan, Salzmann, as well as cities and their complex compositions – all of which is easy to pick out in his paintings.

Venice and New York are Bernhard’s most exciting places to visit, because as an artist he finds surprising dimensions, reflections, atmosphere, light, compositions, and a special spirit that he cannot quite explain.

Bernhard hopes that when viewers see his work, they can imagine touching them. I certainly want to put my hand through the magical veil he has cast over the cities represented in his paintings! How about you?

Bernhard says his unique style has come with a lot of work. He believes you cannot learn or change it. I agree, and I definitely wouldn’t want him to change his style! His paintings are the right balance of descriptive cityscapes and imaginative wonder.
