Street Art From the Capital Cities of Europe

By Lizzie Davey @Wanderarti · On 9 May, 2014

Street art can tell us so much about a place. It can give us an insight into the social past, present, and future. It can show us how locals feel about certain topics like their government, their freedom, and their lives. And it can open us up to a more introspective look at a place. I love seeking out beautiful street art on my travels, and could spend hours wandering around taking photos of colourful patterns, cartoon-like people, and surreal scenes.

For today’s post, I’ve decided to gather some photos of street art from all over Europe. Enjoy!

I’m actually heading to Lisbon in a few weeks, so will hopefully be able to dedicate a post solely to the street art in Lisbon when I return! I’ve heard great things about the artwork there.

Street art doesn’t always mean painting on a wall. It can be other little aesthetic pieces that are displayed out and about on the street… Like this knitted guy perching on a post! As you probably know, Berlin is the mother-city of all street art, so I wanted to show something a bit different.

Budapest

Zagreb

Like I said before, street art doesn’t always mean colourful paintings on the wall, as this silver sculpture in Zagreb, Croatia, demonstrates. Street art is exactly that… art on the streets!

Obviously not every capital city in Europe is featured here, but I hope this gives you an idea of the range of street art on display throughout the continent. Please note that street art changes regularly, so pieces shown here may no longer be on display. That’s one of the things I love about street art – that it changes so regularly, like an on-street, temporary exhibition.

She created Wanderarti as a space for this new term to flourish, providing somewhere for art and travel to collide. Apart from pretty things and exploring new places, Lizzie likes tea, takeaways, and cute animals.

Thanks Lydian! I’m a big fan of street art, too, so I’m enjoying your Street Art Tuesday’s a lot 🙂

That’s incredible, Lizzie. How does anyone even try to summarize Europe, let alone the street art within any given city? I do not envy you at all. 🙂 Thanks for summarizing and for writing about this!

Exactly! Especially when within each country, city, town, and village there’s various different kinds of cultures and therefore many different kinds of artists! So glad you like it, though – I’m aiming to do a few more street art related posts, too, so stay tuned 🙂

Came across your blog through a comment you left on mine. What a great concept for a blog! This post is great. I’ll be in some of these capital cities this summer and will be on the lookout for street art!
